Girl Heroes
I got a message from an old friend on facebook today.

She has a daughter who is interested in comics but she (the mother) feels that the range of female superheroes is limited. She's asking me for suggestions.

Where are the dope girl heroes of this moment?

This question has been asked and answered a million times on the web, but the answer clearly hasn't yet penetrated the mainstream culture. Also, there are bound to be answers to this question that exist nowthat didn't just a moment ago.

I'm formulating my reply to her question... any suggestions?

RUNAWAYS has some of the best superheroines in comics, even if they are teenagers.

I'm a big fan of PATSY WALKER, HELLCAT--mainly due to Katherine Immonen's dialogue. MANHUNTER's canceled, but the trades are in print, and it's a great read, if a little dark. The heroines of ANNA MERCURY and HEXED aren't the spandex-wearing type, but I'd say they fit the mold anyway.

Hmmmm...that's all from the top of my head. I'll list some more if I think of it.

RUNAWAYS -- thanks, that wasn't on my list.

Did you read the new Super Girl?

The heroines in Warren Ellis' stuff tend to be an 11 on a 10-scale of awesome. But if the kid is ten, then she shouldn't be reading about Jenny Sparks in THE AUTHORITY or Jakita Wagner in PLANETARY.

You also can't go wrong with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

Sadly, most super-heroines tend to be almost T&A.

The kid might be a bit young for Jenny Sparks, but her mom is very politically active so maybe not. I'll run it up the flagpole. Buffy is also a great suggestion -- thanks.

How old is your friend's daughter? Landry Walker and Eric Jones are doing a Supergirl miniseries -- Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade -- that is so awesome. They make Supergirl like a real 13-year-old, not some sexed-up teenager, and it's a lot of fun. I figure girls in the mid-to-upper grades of elementary school and early middle school will like it. (Girls, and probably kids in general, tend to like stories in which the protagonist is a little older than themselves.)

I'm not sure of her age, but I think the Supergirl book would be perfect.

Thanks.

I'd also suggest non-superhero comics too. Before MINX went tit's up, it had a lot of female-centric comics. I would also suggest story comics from indies like Dark Horse or Slave Labor (nightmares and fairy tales, Shutterbox, Lenore, etc.)

I would agree with you... but she was really specific about the whole 'heroes' thing.

I would recommend Emily Edison (http://www.zeuscomics.com/products/76397), but I'm obviously biased.
